Is Your Wellness Routine Wearing You Out? A Softer Way to Feel Good This Fall

You can have the supplements, the workout calendar, the sleep tracker, and the morning routine—and still feel like you’re falling behind.

Somewhere along the way, taking care of ourselves can become another thing we’re trying to get right. Another score. Another responsibility. Another reason to feel guilty when life gets messy.

If that sounds familiar, I want to offer you a different invitation this fall: make your practice a place where you can exhale.

Why softer wellness is getting attention

The Global Wellness Summit’s 2026 trend report identifies a growing pushback against over-optimization: the pressure to constantly measure and improve every part of our health. It also highlights rising interest in practices centered on how we feel, rather than only what we can track. [1]

That shift feels especially meaningful as we head into fall. School calendars, work deadlines, family responsibilities, and the approaching holidays can fill every available space. Even the cozy season can become something we’re expected to do perfectly.

You’re allowed to enjoy October without turning it into a self-improvement project.

What about all the nervous system talk?

“Nervous system regulation” has become a popular wellness phrase. I like to bring the conversation back to something practical: learning to notice tension, pause, and choose a response that supports you.

That might mean moving your body. It might mean resting. It might mean taking a few comfortable breaths before answering a difficult message.

There is research behind some of these familiar practices. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports that yoga may help with stress and sleep, although results vary across styles and populations. It also describes preliminary evidence that diaphragmatic breathing may help reduce stress. [2, 3]

Those findings support giving simple practices a place in our lives. They don’t mean we need to turn every breath into a measurement.

Three small ways to make fall feel gentler

1. Choose one anchor you can return to. A weekly class, a short walk, or a few minutes with your journal can give your week a familiar rhythm. Pick something that fits your actual life.

2. Leave room for both strength and softness. I love a strong practice. I also love giving myself permission to slow down. Ask, “What would support me today?” before deciding what your practice should look like.

3. Create a brief transition into evening. Put your phone aside, dim the lights, and sit comfortably. Let your breathing be easy and unforced for a minute or two. You can simply notice your breath if changing it feels uncomfortable.

Let your practice meet you where you are

At HarmonyLab, my hope is that you can arrive exactly as you are. Energized, tired, happy, distracted—all of you is welcome.

This fall, come move with us. Come settle into Yin. Or join our Sound Bath at the end of October for an evening devoted to listening and slowing down.

You don’t have to leave with a perfect score. I hope you leave feeling a little more connected to yourself.

A question for your journal: What part of taking care of myself feels nourishing—and what part has started to feel like pressure?
